This has actually been a recent topic in several groups,
Here's a few to look for:
1.In povray.binaries.images check out a thread called "#macros".
Steve made a useful contribution with a small tutorial and
examples. I found it very helpful(thanks Steve!).
2.In povray.general look for the subject title "Macro tutorial"
started by Andrew Cocker.
3.In povray.unofficial.patches "POV+for()" TonyB
(Really you just want the end of this thread)
4.And there's some more in povray.unofficial.patches. the thread you
want is POV+for() ;the second half really.
5.You may also want to look through povray.utilities which has
several examples of macros, for example: "Replace macro" "The most
unuseful macro" and "Useless macro challenger"(which I found a use
for <smile>).
6.And of course the povray help file...
