Pan does the decoding automatically for you; I didn't see it that way
either, I had to look wthi Thunderbird.

When you say "join files", do you mean post files? If so, that is a
feature in Pan that's not been developed. A lot of the people who use pan
use it for pulling files from binary groups rather than posting - they
tend to use something like newspost for posting files, so that feature has
been low on the list for quite some time. I remember back in the 0.7 and
0.8 days, there was actually a section in the message post dialog to add
files, but it wasn't implemented.

Myself, I tend to avoid posting binaries alltogether, instead posting URLs
to the files on web pages. That way I don't put other readers in the
position of deciding whether or not a file is something they're interested
in before they've read the text of the message; with most readers,
downloading message content is an all-or-nothing proposition, and I prefer
to let those who read my posts decide if they think a potential binary
attachment is something they want to look at or not. :-)
