hehe- 3.1 is the one that last had any POLYRAY support... I just
wanted to see what was left in there. :o)

yeah, I'm strange... I just like to tinker with POLYRAY.

does the animation plugin not allow polyray rendering?

Not everything that POLYRAY allows. For example it will not render to RAW.
I let Alex know that long time ago. I wish the plugin allows for all render
modes that POLYRAU supports.
I am a registered user of POLYRAY and I want RAW back through MORAY :)

Just to leave no room for a misunderstanding: Through MORAY using the
POLYRAY Plugin.
I still have a copy of the latest GUM modeller (from years back) that I use
only for POLYRAY.

what advantages does polyray have over povray ?

Not much anymore.

It had spherical/cylinder heightfields and nurbs, focal plane and
a few other things years before POV, also better texture tools
and MUCH better animation support, but now POV has everything
POLY has as far as I know, and then some.

To me POV's renderer always looked a little colorless compared to
POLY and inevitably flattened colors in a way I didn't like and
couldn't fix easily. This seems not be the case anymore, though
it appears that only certain users go for any color intensity
like what I enjoy, so I assume it still takes some tweaking to
bring out vibrant AND rich colors rather than garish/flat colors
which I see so often in renders.

IMO

In addition to what dearmad mentioned, I have always enjoyed and appreciated
the coloring of what Polyray renders. There is something nice, charming and
lively about it. POVRAY, for some reason, had lacked these qualities.
IMHO, I have always felt that POVRAY, while powerful, is more Academic;
while Polyray is more Poetic.
Another ray tracer that was like Polyray is RayStorm - a short lived
raytracer with a great potential that is no more.
I also like what Polyray is capable of animation wise and rendering into RAW
and wireframes etc......

Yeah, as I said, the colors in POLYRAY really were different than
POV. Poetic cs. Academic is a sutable descriptor. :o)

Though I'm not, I emailed him some year ago about the wish to be able
to export as raw from the plug-in. It's the only way out of Moray for
geometry still, or am I missing something? Have old stuff laying
around, that I would like to process further in other apps.
