I wish we could sort the object in the Select tab by name. It
would make finding them easier, especially for complex scenes
with lots of objects/groups.

I would also like to be able to sort objects in the material
applier screen.

You mean the textures in the Material Editor? There are not object
names in the Material Editor. Or do you mean something else with
"material applier screen"?

Not that I speak for the original poster, but the way I read the message, he
was referring both to the object browser and the Material Editor. It
appears now that both list objects (or materials) in order of appearance.

Anywhere you can see a list of objects, I would like to be able
to sort them. Such as: the Select tab, the Material Assigner
(where you have a list of objects on the left, and materials on
the right). I already know how to sort the textures.

I would like this too. Some kind of structuring to the material editor
would be nice as well (so I can sort my textures into categories) rather
than have them all over the place based only on when I first generated them.

When you are in the material editor, you can click Export.
Another screen appears which has a sort button. Sort your
textures here, export, and when you return to the ME they will be
sorted.

But I see your idea about "grouping" textures together.

Also, sometimes you don't want to sort alphabetically. I have a variety of
wood textures, for example, each one with two versions, polished and
unpolished. Now I could rename them to "Wood Texture A, unpolished" and
"Wood Texture A, polished" but I prefer them to be "Polished wood A" and
"Unpolished Wood A". However, I swap between them while doing various
tests. It'd be nice to be able to move the elements around (up and down the
list) so that they're organized by wood type, by polish type or some other
custom organization (just a simple Move Item would do it). That's a bit
complex, especially if you want to remember orderings, but having a
hierarchy of textures, rather than just a list, would be a great boon for
organizing things (especially when you add all the other textures)
