I'm fairly new to Moray and I'm looking for a way to apply lettering to an
object -- more or less like a decal applied over the base texture.  What I'm
thinking of something similar to what can be done in RayDream -- defining a
shader that has a transparent background and one which can be used over
previously applied shaders.  It seems that the texture modeller allows for
this, but you must carefully scale the material to match the object to which
you are applying it.  Along the way, distortion of text becomes easy.  Is
there a "clean" means of "decaling" the text without going to these lengths.
Like I said -- newbie -- be kind.

Hi David, or may I call you Dave (I'm being kind).

You missed the mark on where a good idea to post is at.  The "binaries"
groups are for posting files, you need to ask at the moray.win group.
I might be able to at least answer you by saying, no, there isn't any other
way than to pick one of the several mapping types most suitable for the
object the decal is going onto and transform (scale, rotate, translate,
etc.) into place.  I could be wrong since I don't use Moray but that's
probably what you'll need to be doing.

it would help a lot to know what kind of object you want to do this to. 
you need to use one of the general mapping methods.  another method you
can use is to make a template image.  make your object hollow, put a
camera in the center, and then hand-code the megapov spherical camera
(making sure to use a 2:1 aspect ratio pointed in the direction of the
decal) to make a template image.  then, in a paint program, you can draw
the text you need.  it is a little difficult since the text will have to
appear bubbled, but if you have a pretty good paint program like paint
shop pro or better, you can use layers and filters to first make the
text, and then shape it as you need it.  the finished image will look
strange flat, but once you map it spherically to the original object,
it'll look fine.
