I like to use huge spheres instead of planes if I'm going to have a wide 
horizon. You don't need much of a curve, just a little bit, to make 
things look much nicer in that respect. I don't know your scale, but 
something like:

sphere {
   <0,-20000,0>,20000
   texture { whatever }
}
