PASSENGER: How long until this train leaves?
CONDUCTOR: That depends.
PASSENGER: Depends on what?
CONDUCTOR: That, also, depends.

It has been over a year since activity took place on the IRTC. If the
old admin won't come back and do the admin thing, replacement is long
overdue.
If the admin, in spite of his/her/its inactivity, cannot be replaced,
the reasons therefore need to be made known to the IRTC community.
If the IRTC is dead and cannot be brought back, the time has come to
make it official.

John

I agree. What I find most annoying is that the final round was never resolved
for those who participated. No voting, no winner. I'm sure some people worked
hard on their images. I know I would have found it disappointing if I had
submitted.

Yeah, no doubt.
I've offered my extra hosting disk space and any requird programming
services I can help with, as I am sure others have as well....to no
avail..not even dignified with a response..
What must be done??
I've not ever entered the IRTC but I sure loved viewing the entries, and
want it to come back.

Where was this message sent? If it was on the mailing list it's possible it
was never seen by any admin (I don't read the mailing list myself).
In any event, hosting is not the issue, it's development of a new
infrastructure and the subsequent administration of the comp. I'm able to
host it and perform basic maintenance and updates, provided the system is
basically automated. Something could be built on the old POVCOMP code is
someone wishes to do so. However it would still require many man-days of
someone's time to get it to a point where this would be possible.

Hey Chris,
I sent it through the email form on the main page.
I usually avoid mailing lists. Too much...um, well...mail... ;-)
What lang was the povcomp code written in?
I have obviously not had a chance to see this code yet, but IME sometimes it
is better to create a new system than to upgrade an old one.
Hmm...I did a Google search for "povcomp code", and the only useful
reference to it is a post by you 1/31/07 offering to provide the code. ;-)
I am not sure of the ins and outs of the old system, as I said before, but I
am envisioning something about like this:
1) web-based voting (gridview w/clickable thumbs for larger image,
dropdowns, enhanced rating categories, etc..)
2) users sign up with basic info and captcha verification, no mailing
list flood, just confirmation e-mail
3) registered users can upload files/images (obvious filtering/etc.. to
prevent injection attacks)
4) some stuff goes into a SQL/MySQL db or related, with actual files
stored on a server and pointers to them stored in the DB (not a big fan of
varbinary for this, but whatever)
5) voting is automatically tallied like so many other online surveys,
etc..
6) perhaps some form of RSS notification of new submissions, voting
results and what not.
7) assuming we knew someones cell carrier and their number we could even
sms when they get voted for and for what...
I say ASP.NET 2/3.5ext, C#, SQL2005....throw a few devs in there and maybe a
graphics designer or two and that is like what? 1 Month at *worst* using
spare time??
I've done that sort of thing before by myself, its not so bad, and I have
most of the code already from other projects, which could be used for
this...
I know there are plenty here who greatly exceed my skill as well...a mean,
some of you built freakin POV-Ray (3 cheers!!) so.... :-D
I'm down for it...
Sincerely,
Ian

At least the "frontend" is written in PHP. I don't know if they have
something else hidden from users (vote counting?).

Hmm...
I still like C#/ASP.NET for it. ;-)
PHP is nice too, just different.

I am a "young cab" of Povray ... nevertheless, my first approach to 3d is
initiated through IRTC and POVCOMP. IRTC is a real mine: many wonderful images,
many sources code, a good philosophy. I believe that the resurrection of IRTC
and/or POVCOMP would give a new impulse to the diffusion of Povray.

Note that the server might very well run on linux (if not even another
flavor of unix). That means C#/ASP is probably out of question.
(Even if it was running on Windows, I think it would still be a good
idea to make the code portable so that it can be transferred to a linux
box if necessary.)

all of them suck very much. I wish ruby or python were far more widespread with

http://www.mono-project.com/ASP.NET
Never used ASP myself (not into web stuff). Mono works great, though.

Actually, I understand that's the one thing that Mono *is* very
compatible with, because it doesn't really have to touch any system
libraries like windowing stuff. I've read you don't even need to
recompile pages.

We use PHP, and the POVCOMP code is written in it. The server runs Apache 2
on FreeBSD.
If, however, as a few in this thread have suggested, it is possible to run
C#/ASP.NET on a Linux system I would be happy to set this up, and in fact
would even be quite interested in seeing if it would work well. I am not a
great fan of PHP, even though it's used extensively throughout the POV
site. (Basically I don't mind it but I would welcome something better).

Hello,
While I have never attempted to use the .NET framework on linux, I
understand it is possible, and seems to be growing in popularity.
Hell, I'd be willing to give it a shot.
Like I said, I am more than willing to throw in my share of code on this.
I *do* have most of the code needed for the features I laid out sitting on
my hdd in chunks right now from other projects and web apps I've built.
Note that I do not want to be the only one working on this though!
(bathed in gastly light from the baleful eye of the entire pov community)
:-D
It would be nice to get a few devs together and establish some sort of
consensus on the lang/platform/db/framework to be used(*without* infinite
debate), and throw some code together in a quick/dirty/small proof of
concept, and then go from there. Sort of a feasibility study.
You know where I am going with the operation of the site, and know where my
vote is cast.
I can be of most use to the project if it uses .NET, but honestly I don't
even care if the app is written in sumerian slashed into the burning flesh
of the damned by Abezithibod himself...
I just want the IRTC back and wouldn't at all mind helping. :-p
So whats next? :-)

What problem are we trying to address that the TC-RTC does not? You can
certainly argue that the TC-RTC is a step backwards from the IRTC in
some ways--but I don't see anyone arguing that. People are just
pretending that the TC-RTC doesn't exist.
Is the problem that the TC-RTC has a name that starts with TC instead of I?

Hi, (nice forest macro, by the way..it looks great)
I intend no offense to the TC-RTC, and wish to avoid tertiary debate, but I
do feel the need to state you made a very good case for the re-animation of
the IRTC:
>People are just pretending that the TC-RTC doesn't exist.
That is a big problem. If people will not use something for any number of
reasons it should/must be replaced.
I didn't even know the TC-RTC existed, its bookmarked now, but the above
point is still very valid.
Additionally:
>What problem are we trying to address that the TC-RTC does not? You can
>certainly argue that the TC-RTC is a step backwards from the IRTC in some
>ways
There are many RTCs out there, I guess its just a matter of exposure, niche
and user preference.
Perhaps the TC-RTC is a step back, I don't know. I'll trust you there.
In the end, since we *can* ressurect the IRTC with improvements, and people
*would* use it and *do* want it back ....I say, why not?
:-D
However I guess you could put a poll on the povray and/or irtc homepage.
