Whenever I was asked, "What will you get if you win?" I was always quick to
tell people, "Mostly just recognition of my peers." Most of them looked at
me funny, similar to the look that people give me when I try to explain Open
Source and the GPL (Most people seem to think Linus was stupid for GPL'ing
Linux. They don't seem to grasp the concept that there wouldn't be a
"Linux" if he had done otherwise. But that's beside the point).

Anyway, I recently started to think about all of the business that we
provide Zazzle, and I was curious if anyone ever contacted them? Something
like "X% off a poster" would be pretty cool for the winners. Additionally,
it would be relatively cheap advertising for Zazzle. Or maybe a dollar-off
amount (like $19) that would result in a "free basic small poster." But
exactly how to handle it may be up to Zazzle.

I wouldn't mind contacting Zazzle, but I'm not sure how to set up
communication between them and the IRTC, nor do I know of a great method of
prize redemption that wouldn't complicate things on Zazzle's side. I don't
see "gift certificates" anywhere on their site.

This is not a complaint. I'm not being whiney, so I hope none of you read
it that way. I'm simply looking at something that might increase
participation and satisfaction in the IRTC.

It's just an idea. Feel free to criticize/comment/flame/whatever...

Well according to the irtc site they do try to give prizes:
http://www.irtc.org/sponsors.html

Though I dunno if anyone ever gets any, maybe I'll find out one day... ;)

If you read the bottom it's somewhat clear. No one has been contacted since
1999, but they are looking into reorganizing sponsor-relationships. Then
the page is dated August 2, 2001. I haven't been contacted, but I realized
that I probably never would be, before I entered the competition.

With such a relatively small volume of participants, it's probably difficult
to keep relationships with sponsors. My guess is that with Zazzle, it may
be somewhat easier, since www.povray.org already has an Associate
relationship with them.
