Maybe you could use a cubic spline instead. Take -2*x^3+3*x^2 in the
region [0;1]. It has a minimum at [0,0], a maximum at [1,1], a point
of inflexion at [0.5,0.5] and is symmetric about [0.5,0.5] . Who could
ask for more? :)
