Maybe it does for Intel platforms. On a K6III, gcc with -O9 does a
much better job than MSVC 6 in terms of speed.

Admittedly, the program used for speed comparisons was a mem hog (ate
up about 150 megs, granted -- without any swapping as I have 192 RAM)
and the speed increase might be due to the better memory management in
Linux. Still, 5-10% is quite good.
