I remember it as very lethal black smoke which turned into a harmless
dark brown powder on contact with water. The humans used superheated
steam as a defense against it, as I remember. I don't recall the method
of delivery, but canisters sound right.
But it's been a long time since I read that book...
Maybe make one leaning at a large tilt on a crumpled leg, with a
decomposing Martian body inside...and a modified steam locomotive
blowing superheated steam at the remains of a cloud of smoke.
