I have been wondering about this myself...it should even be possible to 
recursively divide it into patches which would be generated on the fly, 
to save memory at the cost of rendering speed.

I am also thinking about cloth and gels...if anyone has information on 
these, it would be welcome.
BTW, I just finished the last touches on inter-particle forces and have 
begun testing.
