Many first-time posters post to the wrong groups. You should read the 
messages in povray.announce.frequently-asked-questions, there is a 
message by Ken there explaining the purpose of these groups and general 
rules for using them. There aren't many messages there, you should read 
them all, but especially read these two:

Maybe photon mapping will render the shadow more accurately. This object 
looks like the colored portion should be refracted away,  not casting a 
simple shadow. However, photon mapping is currently only available in an 
unofficial version: MegaPOV, http://nathan.kopp.com/

You might also want to try an area light...that should smooth out the 
shadows and blur their edges. Check the POV-Ray manual, section "4.5.5.4 
Area Light".
