Sorry Paris, but I've no clue what you try to acheive here. Those pro 
packages also use tricks tweaks etc. only their marketing calls them 
'physically-based'. Tell me, for example, the 'trick' we use for brushed 
metal, are the tiny normals not 'physically-based'? Aren't BSDF curves a 
way to simulate the properties of a material instead of modelling them?
If you want to approach 'physically-based' rendering, start with the 
modelling. All these technologies that emerge are ways to get around 
modelling the finest details and implementing real light laws.

Yes, POV-Ray lacks behind. Yet there is no package with the same feature 
set an versatility. There are many render engines that are very good at 
some things, and that is what I notice with the pro's, depending on the 
goals you pick the engine.

Yes, POV-Ray lacks behind in many respects. But all we have to do is to 
wait untill someone writes the code to implement a new feature, not 
spend big bucks to buy yet another engine with some new feature.

... and then, what is photo realism worth ....?
