I've added a description of the technique to my isosurface tutorial at
<http://www.econym.demon.co.uk/isotut/substitute.htm#spherical>

The main difference here is that I've diagonalized the mesh by using
"f_mesh1(x+z, y, z-x, ..." instead of "f_mesh1(x,y,z,..."

It can't be the weaving of a real microphone because the wires become
infinitely close together at the poles.
