That's what I was doing initially. For example in
<http://news.povray.org/3cfa828e@news.povray.org>
the hemisphere and plane are POV primitives.

If I know that the object is going to be perfectly rigid I can go
directly to the POV primitive, but if there's a possibility of it
wobbling or rotating I use a mesh.

I just happen to have used a mesh in this case, even though the sphere
is rigid, because I was testing my new mesh2 creation code.
