Boost isn't slow. Mutexing is slow (relatively). Using mutexes adds
some few dozen cycles to a function's run time, meaning that for rather
fast functions (which are only a few dozen cycles, or even less) it can
reduce speed dramatically.
Of course, if you're looking at functions that typically take hundreds
or thousands of cycles to complete, the cost of using mutexes is
trivial.
