I've found that I need an about 120 dpi greyscale image to get a
good quality halftone (on my Epson Stylus 800). About 180 for
diffusion dither 360 dpi bitmap.

Of course, this "rule of thumb" is bunkum nonsense if your target
printer is a continuous tone device, like a dye sub. Then you
need to generate at the actual resolution of the device.
