Strange. I also use Thunderbird and I've never had this kind of crash. 
This is the macOS 128.7.1esr (64-bit) version.

Clearly, posting “.exe” directly is dangerous and should not be done. 
But from that to crashing the software...

Do you have a reference to a message containing an exe so that I can 
redo a test and see what happens?
