If there were that sort of wishlist, I'd wish for fudgable tangent-maps for
bicubic patches.
bicubic_patch {
vertex_vectors ...
normal_vectors ...
}
would allow, I think, one to smoothly (to the eye) join patches at valence
!= 4 vertices.
