That's all right. I have continued my investigations a bit:

Problem: POVtree does not export to mesh{} with uv-mapped leaves. There 
is a bug in the program. A pity Gena disappeared from the web. :-( so my 
idea to experiment with that comes to naught.

I am looking into Arbaro right now.
