There are tools around that do extract the approximate position of one,
two, three or even 20 or 100 light sources from any given HDR by using
a median cut algorithm. Have a look e.g. here:
http://gl.ict.usc.edu/Research/MedianCut/
and I think even PoseRay can do it.
