Decided to give blender a go again ... worked through this tutorial:

and came up with this logo of one of the teams I'm currently following.

BTW: If you decide to give it a go, I spotted an error or a change with 
the version I'm using (2.6.3) ... to close the curve(s) it's Alt+C (with 
one end point selected) instead of just "C"
