Boyfriend/girlfriend is sexual or romantic. Man friend/woman friend is
platonic.
People are supposed to be settled by the time they are adults so they
until they were engaged they were only friends. There are other phrases
that are not age specific such as courting, stepping out, seeing each
other, or winching. Winching is the Scots word for French kissing but
when applied to a couple it implies that they are in a serious relationship.
