Which isn't much help if you are dealing with the "extended-extended"
version, which covers "The Clone Wars" cartoon series, which is sort of,
"Ok, how exactly did Anakin go that wrong, and why didn't the Jedi
notice?". Then, if you want to know who Sideous/Palpatine really is, you
need to read the book Plegues, where its reveals that this name, which
he drops in the third movie, was in fact Palpatine's own master, and why
it is that there seemed to be a bit more than two sith around
(especially in the cartoon).

And, well.. Past that, it might help to read Bane (I haven't yet), to
understand how the sith went from having their own batch of star
systems, and an empire, to "there are only ever two, master and
apprentice, no more". Not to mention quite a few "old republic" books,
that cover various things from an even longer time ago, and hint at how
the sith "become" sith, instead of just corrupted Jedi.

That is, if you want to know all the "in between" details that flesh out
what is going on. It seems, even the darkside itself might not be what
it seemed to be, or what I previously concluded from reading something
else, but may be linked to an entity so old it may have been working
corruption through the entire span of the republic, and possibly even
25,000 years back, or more (roughly 5,000 years after the decline of the
Celestials), before the Rakata had even used the dark side to enslave a
large portion of the galaxy (including most/all of the worlds in the
republic), only to suffer some massive plague, which robbed them of the
ability to use the very power they employed to keep control.

The "Fate of the Jedi" books are proving interesting, but the last one,
which involves the final details of what this being is, and how its
linked to the dark side, is in the next one, which isn't out until the
13th of this month (sigh...).

Taken by themselves, the movies definitely have problems. Taken as a
whole, including the books in the "expanded universe".. its nice to have
those details in the first three movies filled in.
