Reminds me of the technique on old computers (like 8 MHz ones) to animate so 
many spheres.  You could spend ages rendering nicely shaded spheres into 8 
or so framebuffers, then cycle the screen memory start address pointer and 
get an amazing looking smooth animation (for the time).
