Try to update to the newest version of Firefox 3.5 - had similar problems
with an early 3.5 (forgot which subversion) - and it took ages to start.
This error has been fixed by now - if error it can be called. They develop
primarily for Linux, the problem did lie with some windows libraries, if I
remember correctly.
IF problems persist - to boot from a clean disk an run your favourite
AV-program and/or Spybot Search&Destroy. A virus might be another possible
explanation.
