High!
After finishing the Jovian moon system in PoVSolar (for the time being),
now back to one of my other projects: Port Whatmough and its fabled
maglev-based personal traffic system, better know as MyMaglev.
Currently, there is nothing more than a modest demonstration course,
limited to 5 metres per second as maximum speed for the (yet-to-program)
personal carriages, due to the narrow bend radius of 15 metres.
It is a maglev system on a 60-cm gauge; in the future, there will be
also conventional long-distance trains on a wider gauge as well as a
suspended version of MyMaglev (similar to the Wuppertal
Schwebebahn/Eugen Langen Monorail Suspension Railway in Germany
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuppertal_Schwebebahn), but, like said, as
a maglev rather than a conventional railway).
Port Whatmough is the largest city on Whatmough, an Earth-like moon of
temperate gas giant HD 28185 b
(http://www.extrasolar.net/planettour.asp?StarCatId=normal&PlanetId=158),
colonized since 2178. City and moon are named in honor of John Whatmough
(1973-2005), space artist and founder of "Extrasolar Visions". The time
setting of this sci-fi world to be developed will be around 2300, when
Port Whatmough has grown to a size of several million inhabitants.
I hope that, simultaneously to the development of MyMaglev, I will be
able to also build substantial parts of the city itself during the next
years - contributions are always welcome!
The two images attached here show the maglev "rail" at the starting
point of demonstration rides (where I will add a platform soon) and an
overview of the whole course from a height of 400 metres.
Also, an animation of the (back then not yet closed) course is available
at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAZCqvYjY8c .
See you in Khyberspace!
