the black splotches in the mirror are *not* artefacts! They are supposed to 
show the age of the mirror. I used a boxed pattern to achieve them...

However, interesting that you saw them as artefacts :-)  What the render 
needs of course, is a better aa, especially for the wood pattern of the 
mirror frame.
