Here's a more convincing use of IES files (done in Vray, not by me).

The good thing with IES files is that ligthing manufacturers provide them
for free. People who specialise in architectural visualisation can then
light their scenes with the exact lighting data from a particular lamp
model, compare lighting effects with each other etc.
