DAZ Studio is free (for posing), and there are some free and legal Poser 
models floating around the net, like Apollo

There's also an Open Source project called MakeHuman 
http://www.dedalo-3d.com/ but I don't know how usable it is now compared to 
Poser and DAZ Studio.
