I the reflections cannot be seen consider turning them off.
Normal maps is a good idea but remember you don't get any bumps in the 
shadows.

The first thing to do with radiosity is to set any object's ambient to 
zero unless you want them to glow and shine on other objects (e.g. a TV 
screen). You may also have to decrease the brightness of the light 
sources and removing any flood lights you use.
To turn the radiosity on add radiosity{} to the global_settings{} block. 
This turns on the radiosity with the default settings. As you use 
light_sources you don't need as high quality setting as you would need 
if you used shining objects to light up the room. As for the settings, 
there's a nice tutorial in the pov-ray documentation but feel free to ask.
