If you just want to do some patch modelling, you can also try Blender (which
runs natively under Linux - http://www.blender3d.org

Blender is free, unlike 3DSMax.

Its output can be directly exported to PovRay using various export scripts
written for it, or you can output its models and textures using the
built-in .OBJ (WaveFront) format, and then convert them for use using
PoseRay. As Txemi says, PoseRay runs under Wine, inside Linux.
