I talked to a person once who had studied Chinese (the language) for many 
years.  He had quite a great deal of knowledge of the language.  Then he 
went to China.  There he saw little children speaking Chinese better than he 
did.  Suddenly, he realized that he didn't know nearly as much as he had 
thought.

From reading his web-site, it sounds like he has "studied" POV-Ray quite a 
bit over many years, but was probably never actually an avid user.  In his 
mind, he was an expert.  Then he came here...
