I can't recall how fast it was, presumably slower than a textured primitive,
but i once used Gilles' grass macro to make a carpet. i applied a few
textures to the result and it looked like a reasonable shag carpet. it did
have some undesirable moire effects if i remember correctly, but that could
have been fixed with some additional layers of "grass". i didn't play too
much with it, i was just messing around with the macro at the time.
