Define one pigment that is your image map.  Define a
second pigment to be the back side of your shape.
Now make a pigment that is a front-to-back gradient
with a pigment_map from your image pigment to your
second pigment.

Tha will work for simple objects (IE, the "front" is
flat).  UV-mapping will work for more complicated
(mesh, most likely) objects.
