It makes no sense using variable-width font when readind and specially
when writing news articles.

By writing formatted text (or ascii graphics like in your case) with
a variable-width font you are assuming that everyone else in the world
is using the exact same font as you are. Naturally this is not so but in
just a few cases.
Since no-one else will probably have the same font configured in their
newsreader as you, they will see the ascii art completely screwed up.

When writing formatted text (or ascii art) you should always use
a fixed-width font the ensure that other people (who also should be
using a fixed-width font) will see what you are seeing.
And naturally you should use a fixed-width font when reading news
articles to ensure that you see what others wanted you to see.

Using a fixed-width font is the only way to be sure that characters
will align vertically the way you (or anyone else) intended.
