There is a fog on the planet.
If I left the fog alone, the star, incredibly far away, would be "fogged
out", even with setting a fog_offset. So, I have a scattering set up in the
media of the star. But the effect doesn't quite look right because as you've
observed, there is a black ring.
I think I'll go with the daytime scene. For most of my recent anims, I've
tried creepy dark settings and never got the effect quite right...
