Alas, I fear it is not so simple.
An open source project needs some leader(s), to coordinate effort, etc.
Even if it is perfectly distributed, the site can be closed, even the server
owners can be sued, etc.
Big companies are powerful (lot of money, lot of lawyers), and are very
aggressive when they feel their money is threatened...
