The best way to do a laser beam is to fake it.  Use cylinders with media or
cylinders that have a greater than 1 value for ambient (or a combination of the
two).  Give them "no_shadow" keywords and you will not have "ghost" beams
showing up, only the ones you mean to have.
    I would write a macro that figures out where the cylinders should be and how
much brightness they should have (for the beam splitter, for instance.)
