  Radiosity is not the answer for everything. This image doesn't even look
like it benefits at all from radiosity. In fact, as you note as well, it
actually hides details, instead of enhancing them.

  With no radiosity and a proper area light this would probably render in
less than 10 minutes and could look at least as good, if not even better.
