Both actually, the light "beam" around the glass tree isn't really intended
to light the tree up, it's there to help give the scene more atmosphere. The
tree itself actually "emits" light. The method I used for this effect was
emission media and with media attenuation on for the light source causing
the beam diminishes as it passes both through the tree and the atmospheric
media causing the beam itself.
