Not only. There is a long tradition among the christian painters to have 
the light above and from the left. As christians invades nearly 
everywhere, it has become traditional lightning of most past artistic works.
It's mainly due also to the fact that to avoid being dazzled (*), the 
painter has to turn its back to the sun, and in the north hemisphere
the sun is on the left the afternoon.

If you want to trigger a 'early morning' feeling, you put the light
low on the right, but the light is better later in the day...

*: as well as avoiding the representation of the sun, and the 
contre-jour for the subject.
