The technique you're asking for is pretty simple
and you've already named the basics of it yourself.

There is a short explanation to be found at

You can find another short explanation on
my homepage (URL below) in the gallery.
The image "Worldbowl" (newest image as of
right now) uses this technique twice, you can
look at it there and download the scene-file
as well (as a ZIP).

Hope this supplies a nudge in what directions
you should go...
