I posted an image and some source on Fri, 01 Dec 2000 which may do what you
want, the subject was Re: Earth at night (17K).  I used a megapov feature to
do it, but you could do it with a gradient instead of a slope dependent
texture in normal Pov without too much trouble.  I also have a bit of code
which adds clouds, specular highlights on the ocean, and atmosphere to this
which I could dig up if you want.
