Actually it is done with AA but without enough samples or intervals or
something like that. That's where the disc-like structure comes (still
haven't figured it out exactly). The fire consists of a cylinder,
containing the media. The bottom of the cyl. is the plane, where the
flame originates, and with not enough accuracy in the integration
something weird happens. I had it with a plane at the origin and there
the pixels you see here in black were black there too, instead of the
plane pigment, as one could expect. 
The top of the still doesn't look like what I wanted it. It is formed by
two black hole warps, one attracting and one repelling, which are moved
by a smooth noise (therefore MegaPOV was used). The round spot at the
end of the animation is caused by a not so lucky placement of the two
warps. Perhaps some more warps will help.
