Alright, try this:

Sure fire way to set up media. This will give you all the steps, but for
media to work correctly, make sure they're all true.

1. Create standard texture with interior (you probably got this already :)
2. Create a pigment and solid color under [standard texture] and set it to
white, with the filter value set to one. This makes sure the container
object it transparent, so you can only see the media.
3. Create a media definition under [interior]
4. Mess around with the emission/absorbtion/scattering color you want.
5. Create a density definition under the new media.
6. Under the [density] you just created, create any of the colormap
patterns.
7. In the colormap pattern you create, set both "colors" to a shade of grey.
This shade of grey determines how dense the media is, so you don't have to
go through anything else.
8. Repeat steps 3-7 again for more media definitions.
9. Remember to make media objects hollow.

Believe me, I had the same trouble with media originally, and I know how it
feels :)

Happy tracing!
