As well as Ken and Tim's suggestions, you can also try using Photoshop, PSP,
Corel Photopaint or some other similar program. Use white text on a black
background and then use blur and/or gradient fill functions on the text. Save
the result as an image and use it as a heightfield with a water_level to get
rid of the background.

As well as bevelling, you could also get quite funky with your text this way.
