I agree. I am currently damned to the Winsux world, but I frequently
have problems viewing avi animations. This is often but not always an
"unsupported codec" problem on my ancient system. On the other hand,
I use Vmpeg (free, available via mpeg.org) to view mpeg videos and I
have viewed literally every irtc-anim video without difficulty in
spite of my limited hardware and the only ones that have given me
problems on the newsgroup are the occasional Mac-generated mpeg that
has not been "flattened" (had the resource fork removed). Even then,
by manually removing it I can usually view them.
