Sorry, but you can't use an image file to be rendered the way your asking.  You can
use them to make a
heightfield, but I don't think thats what you want.
    As far as knowing C or C++, I don't and I'm getting a fairly good handle on the
code.  The best way to
learn the language is to do all of the tutorials included in the help file.
    If you need some help with code you can always post to these groups, or if you can
access IRC you can go
onto any server and join the #povray channel.  The people there are very helpful. 
When you join the room,
even if it looks empty except for a bot, (something like dalpov, or efpov etc....) say
hello,  There may be
someone in the channel on another net..  All the irc nets are linked with bots.
